Product Description : Non-GMO F1 Asparagus Seed

Quantity : Approximately 20 seeds

Maturity : Approximately 7 months

Yield: Perennial crop. Can continuously harvest for long term.

Our seeds are technologically processed and hygienically packed to ensure maximum and quality yield. Please be sure to examine the correct plant seeds before sowing and ensure proper planting practice under the right weather conditions.

There are many possible reasons why seeds don't germinate. The key factors are the seedling soil used, moisture level, temperature, how deep the seeds are buried etc.

If you have a low germination rate, you are welcome to contact us so that we can help find out why the germination rate is low.

SEED SOWING GUIDE

  1. PATIENCE IS VERY NEEDED IN SOWING AND PLANTING ASPARAGUS
  2. Use pots with 8.5 cm diameter to sow seeds.
  3. Fill up the pots with SHS KEBUN Peat Moss or Baba's Seedling Soil (avoid using top soil or garden soil).
  4. Poke a hole with your index finger then put 1 seed into the hole.
  5. Cover with a thin layer of soil.
  6. Place the pots in a cool shady place and water once a day in the morning.
  7. The seeds are expected to germinate around 7 – 30 days if the environment is right.
  8. Once germinated, move the pots to a place where there is sunlight (but no direct sunlight).
  9. When the seedlings are about 20-25 cm tall (approximately 1 month), transplant the seedlings into planting pots/bed. Keep a  30-40 cm distance between plants.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PLANTING POT/BED

  • Use a pot with a 8.5 cm diameter or more to sow the seeds.
  • Asparagus is a perennial vegetable which means they live and can produce many years. It is a long-term project so it is important to plan very well before you start to plant.
  • Choose a permanent plot in your garden that you want the asparagus to grow for at least 5-10 years and above.
  • Space is also important. Estimate that each plant will require about 30-45 cm of space.
  • Ten plants will fit in a 1.2 x 4.8 meter bed and are generally enough to supply a family of four.
  • Choose an area that the asparagus can receive at least 6 hours of sunlight a day.
  • If you are using a pot, choose a pot with a depth/diameter of minimum 30 cm for each plant.
  • If you are planting on the ground, make sure the depth of soil is at least 30 cm.
  • Asparagus roots can go very deep and wide. The deeper and wider they can go, the stronger and healthier they will be.
  • Large nonwoven planters can be a good choice because water will not retain in the planter. It also allows the roots to breath easily. It is also very easy to change planters, if there is a need after several years.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PLANTING SOIL/MEDIUM

  • Asparagus needs organic-rich, well-drained soil with good ventilation. You may want to prepare the bed 6-12 months ahead by doing composting on the planting bed so that it has a thick layer of organic rich compost.
  • The soil should not be too wet or soggy all the time.
  • If you need to start transplanting immediately, we recommend using Baba's Yasa-I Organic Vege soil for higher yield.
  • If you are preparing your own soil, consider adding peat moss which has good ventilation and can retain moisture well.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FERTILIZERS

  • Use BABA Compost-based Organic Fertilizer as the base fertilizer. Mix 30-50% of it to your potting mix or planting bed. This will give a good head-start for the seedling to grow healthily and strong to fight diseases.
  • You may also mix the SHS KEBUN Blood and Bone Meal natural fertilizer into your potting mix/bed before planting. Apply approximately 100g per planting hole.
  • One week after transplanting, apply high N (nitrogen) organic fertilizer weekly for bigger and healthier leaves.
  • We recommend using Baba's Mr Garnick Leafy Fertilizer 532 or SHS KEBUN N6:P3:K3 natural fertilizer.
  • Apply one handful of the fertilizer between 2 plants. Dig a small hole/trench and apply the fertilizer. Cover with a thin layer of soil and water gently.
  • Apply Baba Compost-based Fertilizer to increase the fertility of the soil every time after harvesting.

WATERING

  • After transplanting, give the asparagus seedlings a good shower.
  • Water once or twice a day depending on the weather condition. The plants will thank you for keeping the soil moist but not too wet.

SOIL pH

Asparagus grows well in an environment that has pH around 7, not too acidic, not too alkaline.

PEST CONTROL

  • Apply Mr Garnick Dr. Neem every 7-10 days to deter potential pests.
  • You may also apply Ken's Natural Garlic Plus every 7-10 days.

WEED CONTROL

  • Mulch with a thick layer of dry leaves or grass cuttings to prevent weeds, retain moisture as well as adding organic matter to the soil.
  • You may also use SHS KEBUN Palm Fibre Mat to cover the bed. It comes with 1 m and 40 cm sizes.

MAINTENANCE

Trim branches and leaves regularly so that it is airy enough to prevent pest infestation.

HARVESTING TIPS

  • Asparagus spears will start to appear the following year. Resist the temptation to harvest in the first year.
  • Instead, allow the foliage to continue developing. This will help to feed the plants and establish healthier growth next year.
  • The high-yield period will begin from the 3rd year onwards and can last for 8 to 12 years, or more.
  • You can use a sharp knife to cut the spears or just snap it off near the base.
  • The best time to harvest is early morning before the sun rises so that the spears are fresh and will not lose too much fluid.
  • Cut before ferns start to grow otherwise it becomes woody.
  • The spears grow fast and will literally pop up of the soil over night. So keep an eye and harvest regularly to promote more spears.
