DOLOMITE / GROUND MAGNESIUM LIMESTONE
WHAT IS DOLOMITE / GROUND MAGNESIUM LIMESTONE
Dolomite is a naturally occuring mineral composed of calcium magnesium carbonate. Ground Magnesium Limestone is dolomitic limestone ground into powder form.
WHAT IS GML USED FOR IN GARDENING AND AGRICULTURE?
As a soil conditional to adjust pH
If applied correctly, GML increases the pH of acidic soil to provide an optimum condition for nutrient uptake and good environment for soil microorganisms to thrive.
Calcium and Magnesium
Calcium strengthens cell walls and increases resistance to disease. Calcium is vital in making sure the plant develops and grows properly and avoids dying or withering too quickly. It’s very similar to the role of calcium in the human bones.
Magnesium increases chlorophyll production in leaves thus enhances the green colour of the leaves.
Some common magnesium deficiency symptoms are a characteristic interveinal chlorosis pattern where the veins remain green but tissues between the veins turn yellow, leaf curling, stunted growth, and lack of sweetness in the fruit.
HOW MUCH SHOULD I APPLY?
The results of your garden’s soil test will help you determine how much to apply. You’ll need to know your soil’s starting pH and the composition or soil structure.
Most plants require a soil pH of 6.0 to 7.4. If your soil pH is 5.9 or below, GML can help raise the pH to make the soil more plant-friendly. Some plants prefer acidic soils though (lower pH), so make sure you know your plant's specific needs before adding GML.
It needs several weeks or months to adjust the pH and help make more nutrients available to your plants. So apply early before planting,
